Syria denies Israeli allegation on carrying weapons to Lebanon
20/7/2006 10:16

A Syrian source on Wednesday denied as "totally baseless and unfounded" an Israeli allegation that Israeli warplanes shelled trucks traveling from Syria to Lebanon carrying weapons and ammunition, the official SANA news agency reported.

Major-General Gadi Eisenkot of the Israeli army command said on Tuesday that Hezbollah had continued to smuggle weapons from Syria and Israeli warplanes had destroyed several trucks carrying weapons that had entered Lebanon from Syria.

The Syrian source said that such an Israeli allegation aims to create a pretext to justify its brutal crimes against innocent Lebanese civilians and prevent humanitarian aid from reaching the Lebanese people.

The source said that the targeted trucks were a convoy of trucks laden with medical aid donated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) heading for Lebanon through the Syrian borders and a truck from Lebanon to Damascus which happened to be on the site at the time of the attack.

The source said that the UAE convoy included a caravan carrying medical materials and medicines and some ambulances.

Meanwhile, the UAE Red Crescent condemned the attack, saying that "the Israeli act contradicts all international charters and violates the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian laws", SANA said.
