Malaysia considers sending peacekeepers to Lebanon-Israelborder
21/7/2006 10:00

Malaysia is seriously considering sending a peacekeeping force to the Lebanon-Israel border once the United Nations Security Council made a decision on that, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said yesterday.

Based on Malaysia's experience and involvement in Bosnia in the past as well as its current position as the chairman of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), there is a strong casefor Malaysia to seriously consider it, Najib told Malaysia's national news services Bernama in London.

Currently, the matter was still at the proposal stage and no decision had been made by the UN Security Council, said Najib, who was on a working visit to Britain.

The decision to send Malaysian peacekeepers there also has to be made by the Malaysian Cabinet, he added.

Bernama said that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had a proposal to dispatch large numbers of peacekeeping troops to the Lebanon-Israel border to stop the conflict between the two nations.
