Saying the escalating crisis " threatens to engulf the entire region with
incalculable consequences," Pakistani leaders yesterday called on international
community to end the Israeli attacks on Lebanon. "The international
community, especially the major powers and the UN Security Council, must
urgently intervene to contain the situation through an immediate ceasefire,
de-escalation and reversal of Israeli aggression," Pakistani Foreign Ministry
said in a statement issued after a meeting between the President Pervez
Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. Pakistan supports efforts by the
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and all other initiatives to ensure
full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon, the
statement said. It said the OIC must respond urgently and effectively to
demonstrate its solidarity and support to Lebanon and to consider measures to
bring the Israeli aggression to an end and to mobilize the international
community for this purpose. "The President and the Prime Minister will
intensify consultations with leaders of the OIC member states for a joint
response to the crisis situation in Lebanon," the statement said. The
international community must also ensure that the desperately needed
humanitarian assistance reaches the people of Lebanon, it said. Pakistan has
already made arrangements to dispatch the relief goods especially food and
medical supply as soon as it becomes possible to send the supplies to the
affected people in Lebanon, according to the statement.
