Protests against Israeli attacks on Lebanon are taking place cross Britain
yesterday. Hundreds of thousands of people joined demonstrations in London,
Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Kirkcaldy, Manchester,
Newcastle, Sheffield and York. The demonstrations came as the British and the
US governments continued to resist international pressure to back an immediate
ceasefire and Israel looked set to escalate the conflict. In London,
demonstration included a march past the US Embassy and a rally in Hyde
Park. The protests were organized by groups such as Stop The War Coalition
and the Muslim Association of Britain. A spokesman for the protests said
"Israel's war in Gaza and Lebanon is escalating into an international crisis
which could soon engulf the whole region." Meanwhile, a rally to show support
of Israel's "right to defend itself" is being held in Kenton, to be held in
Middlesex on Sunday by the Board of Deputies of British Jews. Henry Grunwald,
president of the board, said "At a time when the situation in the Middle East is
extremely precarious, we would like to send a message of support to the people
of Israel."
