Israeli troops enter villages in southern Lebanon

Israeli troops yesterday entered villages in southern Lebanon under the
cover of heavy artillery and tank fire, local popular daily Yedioth Ahronoth
reported. Israeli forces entered areas in south Lebanon and took positions in
Shiite villages there, said the report, without revealing further
details. Meanwhile, Israeli ground troops were also operating in Lebanon 's
Meron A-Ras region to detect rocket launchers and underground bunkers where
Hezbollah guerillas might hide. Israel continued air strikes against
Hezbollah targets across Lebanon. On Saturday afternoon, Israeli warplanes
raided an antenna in northern Lebanon. A Lebanese army source said that the
antenna belonged to a cellular phone company while Israel said it served
Hezbollah-run Radio Nour, which Israel said disseminated propaganda and
incitement against Israel. Over 1,800 targets have been hit since Israel
launched a massive assault against Lebanon on July 12 following the capture of
two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerillas. Thousands of Israeli troops are
being massed along the border but Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan
Halutz said on Friday evening that military incursions into Lebanon would be
limited in scope. Small numbers of Israeli troops have intruded into south
Lebanon in the past few days, mounting "pinpoint" attacks on Hezbollah posts and
withdrawn quickly. Israel has not ruled out a massive ground offensive into
Lebanon.
