24/7/2006 10:05

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, after a meeting with US President George W. Bush in the White House on Sunday, called on US intervention to stop the violent conflicts between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah.

"We requested a cease-fire to allow for the cessation of hostilities," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said after the meeting of more than an hour with Bush and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The Saudi official also said that he brought a letter to President Bush from Saudi King Abdullah and the called for an immediate cease-fire, the start of a prisoner exchange between Hezbollah and Israel, and delaying the dismantling of Hezbollah for now.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, the international community has called for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah, as the conflicts have killed over 300 Lebanese, wounded over 1000 and forced over 500,000 people to leave their homes.

However, the Bush administration has defended the military action Israel took against Hezbollah, claiming that Israel is defending itself.
