Indonesian President urges UN to end Middle East conflicts
26/7/2006 18:16

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday reiterated his calls for the United Nations to play a pivotal role in ending clashes between Israel and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

"Indonesia expects the United Nations to have a courage to end the warfares and prevent casualties among innocent civilians," Susilo was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying.

Speaking at the Hasanuddin Airport in South Sulawesi capital ofMakassar, Susilo said the conflicts have breached international laws and humanitarian values as civilians are targeted.

Indonesia considers it very crucial for global actions to initiate unconditional cease fire and channel humanitarian supplies to victims without any impediments, he said.

"If the U.N. Security Council doesn't reach any binding agreement for a peaceful solution in the region, Indonesia considers it very important for a special session of the U.N. General Assembly," he said.
