Finland identifies officer among UN observers killed in Israeli
28/7/2006 9:58

Finland yesterday identified the Finnish UN observer killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon earlier this week.

The military said in a statement that the observer was 29-year-old naval Lt. Captain Jarno Makinen and he had served with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) since November 2005.

He was one of 14 Finnish officers with the UNTSO force.

The statement said "It is feared that Makinen was killed in the strike on the Khiam observation post on July 25," but did not say that Makinen's body had been found.

The UN observation post in Khiam where four observers - a Chinese, a Canadian, a Finnish and an Austrian- took cover were hit by a large bomb fired by Israeli forces on late Tuesday night.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has said three bodies of the observers, including the Chinese observer, have been recovered.
