European Union (EU) is to hold an "extraordinary meeting" of foreign
ministers on August 1 to discuss the situation of Lebanon, the EU Council
announced in Brussels yesterday.
In a written statement issued by the EU Council, the EU's decision-making
body, the one-day meeting will focus on the Middle East situation and the
ministers will try to explore some way out to address the Israel-Lebanon
conflicts.
Following the eruption of the Middle East crisis, the EU has been active in
addressing the crisis.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana had visited the region two times since
the crisis broke out, and Italy hosted an international meeting on resolving the
crisis.
The European Commission (EC), the EU's executive, has so far allocated 20
million euros (around 25.2 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid to Lebanon
over last two weeks. On Wednesday, it decided to increase the assistance to 50
million euros (around 63 million U.S. dollars), and the upcoming foreign
ministers' meeting is expected to give a nod on the plan.
