Spain is willing to contribute troops to an international peacekeeping
operation in Lebanon, but will wait for the final decision made by the UN
Security Council and the European Union (EU), a senior government official said
here on Friday.
The Spanish government will take its decision based on the mandate and nature
of the peacekeeping mission and in line with the political and military
situation in the region, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, the first deputy
prime minister, told reporters after a weekly cabinet meeting.
"Spain will be on the side of the decisions taken by the European Union and
the United Nations and will continue to play an active role within international
organizations to seek a solution," she said.
The international conference in Rome this week was "cautiously positive," she
said.
She added Spain supports the international efforts to help mediate a
ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel as soon as possible.
