The Tanzanian government called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel
and Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas in south Lebanon to avoid more deaths of
innocent civilians, the Tanzanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement available
on Tuesday.
"Innocent civilians have been killed and some have been displaced," said the
statement, "We call upon the international community, through the United Nations
Security Council, to ask both sides to start peace negotiations."
"Tanzania believes that sustainable peace will be achieved in the Middle East
through the implementation of the Road Map between Israel and the Palestinians,
as proposed by the international community," the statement added.
Tanzanian Foreign Minister Asha Rose Migiro told local press that the United
Nations should call an emergency meeting to work out a resolution on the issue.
