Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met on Sunday with visiting Arab League (AL)
Secretary-General Amr Moussa, discussing the continued Israeli attacks on
Lebanon, the official SANA news agency reported.
The talks were also concerned with the upcoming Arab foreign ministers
meeting scheduled to be held in Beirut on Monday and the ongoing contacts on the
international and Arab levels to realize a ceasefire, SANA said, without
revealing more details.
The emergency meeting of foreign ministers from Arab countries was proposed
by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faysal.
Moussa will also take part in the meeting, which will look into means to
support Lebanon in the face of the Israeli offensive.
Violence between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah erupted on July 12 after
Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight during
cross-border attacks.
Israel has since waged massive assaults in Lebanon and expanded its ground
operations while Hezbollah has showered Israel with rockets.
Diplomatic efforts are underway to stop the Hezbollah-Israel conflict which
entered its 26th day on Sunday, as some 900 Lebanese and 46 Israelis soldiers
have been killed so far.
