Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday sent a letter to UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan to express his concern over the current crisis in
Lebanon, Brazil's Foreign Ministry said.
He expressed his sympathy for the families of four UN observer skilled in
Lebanon in July, noting that as many Brazilian nationals live in Lebanon, Brazil
was directly impacted by the violence against civilians in the region, where
seven Brazilian citizens, including children, were killed.
He said there are a great number of Lebanese and their descendants, as well
as Jewish people in Brazil, and the Arabs and Jews live harmoniously there.
Lula concluded his letter with a strong appeal for an immediate ceasefire in
the region as a condition to a negotiated, fair and long-lasting peace between
Lebanon and Israel.
