Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit called for amendment of the draft
UN Security Council resolution to end the fighting between Israel and Lebanon's
Hezbollah, the official news agency MENA reported yesterday.
Returning to Cairo from Beirut, Abul Gheit said that the
draft resolution should envisage an Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese
territories and a solution to the disputed Shebaa Farms.
The resolution should go in line with a seven-point plan presented by
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora at the Rome conference on July 26, he
said.
An extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Beirut decided on
Monday to send an Arab League delegation to New York late Monday to seek
amendment of the French-U.S. draft resolution.
Lebanon and other Arab countries have expressed their objection to the
proposed resolution.
Diplomatic efforts are underway to find a long-term solution to the conflict,
as nearly 1,000 Lebanese and over 90 Israelis have been killed since the
fighting began on July 12.
