France has underlined the necessity to move fast for the adoption as quickly
as possible of a UN resolution backed by France and the United States over the
Israeli-Lebanese conflict, while taking into account Lebanon's demand.
Lebanon requested to amend the French-U.S. resolution draft by asking notably
the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the Lebanese territory after
ending the conflict.
"We are aware of the need to move fast," French Foreign Ministry's spokesman
Denis Simonneau told reporters on Monday.
"We hope for an adoption as soon as possible, while trying to take into
account the demands voiced by the Lebanese prime minister," he added.
France was "studying these (Lebanese) proposals with the greatest care, and
along with its partners in the Security Council was looking at ways of taking
them into account," he said.
The French-U.S. resolution draft called for a complete ceasefire, a political
agreement and then the deployment of an international force.
The French spokesman noted that its first goal is to obtain the complete and
immediate ceasefire and that the draft was welcomed by UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan and a large majority of delegations in the UN Security Council.
