Gamal Mubarak, the younger son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, led a
70-strong delegation of government ministers and other officials to visit
Lebanon on Tuesday, saying that it reflected Egypt's solidarity with the
war-torn country.
Gamal led the delegation as the Secretary General of the ruling Egyptian
National Democratic Party's Higher Council of Policies, the official MENA news
agency reported.
Among the senior members of the delegation are also Minister of Trade and
Industry Rashid Mohammed Rashid, Minister of Information Ahmad Nabih el-Fekki
and Minister of Health and Population Hatemel-Gabali.
Upon his arrival back home in Cairo, Gamal said that his delegation held
meetings with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
During the talks with Seniora, the two sides discussed Lebanese
reconstruction and efforts exerted by the Arab countries, especially Egypt, to
rebuild Lebanon, he added.
Gamal stressed that the meetings were aimed to underline the Egyptian support
to the Lebanese stance and to diplomatic efforts seeking the revision of a UN
Security Council draft resolution on Lebanon, which was jointly presented by
France and the U.S.
The high-profile delegation also visited an Egyptian field hospital at the
campus of Beirut Arab University, which was inaugurated on Aug. 2 by Egyptian
Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit.
Operated by some 150 Egyptian doctors and nurses, the field hospital included
three operating rooms for adults and another fully-equipped one for children.
The hospital was treating nearly 1,000-1,500 Lebanese people every day,
according to Gamal.
