Some 358 more Bangladeshi nationals will return home in a day or two from
the war-torn Lebanon, a Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry spokesman said here
Tuesday.
Local news agency UNB quoted Zahirul Haque, Director General of External
Publicity Wing of Foreign Ministry as saying that the Lebanese security
department has cleared 358 Bangladeshis who would be brought to Damascus
Wednesday with the help of International Organization for Migration (IOM) from
where they would be flown to Dhaka.
Bangladeshi Ambassador to Jordan Golam Mohammad who is also accredited to
Syria informed the Foreign Ministry that many more people are now willing to
return home as they feel insecure in view of the intensified Israeli attacks.
Asked about sending of Bangladeshi peacekeepers to Lebanon under the United
Nations' (UN) supervision, Haque said the UN Security Council (UNSC) has not yet
reached any decision on Lebanon cease-fire.
"We're closely watching the development," he said, "If there is any decision,
the question of sending Bangladeshi peacekeepers would come."
Asked about Bangladeshi Prime Minister's letter to five UNSC permanent
members, he said the draft of the letter has been prepared. It will be known
soon when the letter would be sent.
Earlier, 278 Bangladeshi citizens who were employed in Lebanon returned home
last month in the wake of Israeli air strikes.
