Indonesia is still waiting for a UN decision on Lebanon and continued
preparing a force for possible deployment in that country as part of a UN
peacekeeping force, foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda said here on Tuesday.
"We are continuing the preparations with regard to possibly taking part in
the peacekeeping force. We are waiting for a UN decision on it first," Antara
news agency quoted Hassan Wirajuda as saying.
Regarding some quarters that wished to send humanitarian missions to Lebanon,
the minister appealed to them to first consult with his ministry before deciding
to do it.
"If there are groups in Indonesia who wish to help by sending humanitarian
missions there, please consult with us first," he said to reporters.
"Our representatives can tell which places are safe and which are not safe or
which are still blockaded and used for refugee camps badly needing medical or
food aid," he said.
However, he said that no group who had announced their intention to send
humanitarian aid to Lebanon had come to his office for consultations.
On the plan of three legislators to bring humanitarian aid to Lebanon, the
minister said that the government welcomed the mission.
"We welcome it because the government is also doing a similar thing and there
are a lot of ways with which we could hand over the aid," he said.
He said the government had already transferred cash aid to the Lebanese
government.
"I do not know how the legislators would send the aid. The government would
never hinder humanitarian missions," he said.
