The Indonesian National Police (Polri) have forbidden the sending of muslim fighters to Lebanon to fight against Israel.

"But the police supports the sending of Indonesian volunteers to Lebanon for humanitarian purposes as a form of solidarity," Antara news agency on Wednesday quoted police spokesman Brig Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam as saying.

Recently, a number of mass organizations announced a plan to send "jihad" (ready to die for Allah) fighters to Lebanon.

According to the spokesman, the sending of muslim fighters will make an escalation of the conflict and bring problems to the Indonesian Government which had previously determined to only send a peace-keeping force under the banners of the United Nations (UN).

"The action of solidarity with Lebanon and Palestine is not necessarily expressed by participating in the war, but the dispatch of medicines, equipment and other humanitarian assistance. If (we) want to send people, it will be better to help (the Lebanese) from the humanitarian aspect," he said.

Earlier, Indonesian foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda said that his country is still waiting for an UN decision on Lebanon and continued preparing a force for possible deployment in that country as part of an UN peace-keeping force.
