10/8/2006 10:09

Australia will give additional 2 million Australian dollars (1.52 million U.S. dollars) to those affected by the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said on Wednesday.

The new assistance will bring Australia's humanitarian response to 7.5 million dollars (5.7 million U.S. dollars).

Australia's official aid agency AusAID will give 1 million dollars (0.76 million U.S. dollars) to the United Nations World Food Programme to enable the immediate distribution of food and water.

Additional 1 million dollars will be given to the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist Lebanese civilians displaced by the conflict, Downer said in a statement.

Australia is continuing to support diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the immediate crisis and is closely monitoring developments, he said.
