Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam prepared to send over 2,000
troops for peace keeping operation in the Middle East, military commanders from
the three countries said here Thursday.
The troops were prepared to operate in all forms of operation, including
peace keeping or taking part into multi-national operation, despite Indonesian
Foreign Ministry has rejected participation on the multi-national force,
Indonesian Military Commander Air Marshall Djoko Suyanto told a joint press
conference.
"The troops are prepared on both conditions. The troops of the three
countries have well prepared," said Suyanto.
Indonesia prepared 850 personnel of one mechanize battalion, Malaysia between
850 to 1,000 troops of one mechanize battalion and Brunei Darussalam 200
personnel, the commanders of the three countries said at the press conference.
Malaysia would send one ship to support logistic of the troops, said
Malaysian Military commander Admiral Tan Sri Dato Sri Muhammad Anwar.
"(The troops) from the TNI (Indonesian air force) is about 850 personnel (to
be sent to the Middle East), said Suyanto, and the Malaysian military commander
said,"We have prepared maximally about 1,000 people."
The troops from Indonesia and Malaysia, which have long involved in bilateral
military exercise, would also include amour personnel carrier, according to the
military commanders of the countries.
The commanders expressed their optimism to accomplish the mission.
"We are optimized that this mission will reach a good achievement," said the
Malaysian military commander.
The countries then would set up a planning team to make further preparation
of the dispatch of the personnel, said Indonesian military commander.
The decision to send the troops were made during the emergency summit of the
Organization of Islamic Countries in Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of this
month, in the wake of escalation of conflict in the Middle East that has killed
more than 1,000 people, most of them civilians.
Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam are the countries with vast
majority Muslims.
About 87 percent of the Indonesia's 240 million population are Muslim, making
it the most populace Muslim country in the world. Malaysia has about 60 percent
of its population are Muslim.
The meeting of the United Nations Security Council prepared a draft of an
immediate cease-fire in the region but did not stipulate the pulling out of
Israeli troops from the borders.
About 2,000 international peacekeepers are currently posted in the conflict
zone.
