Lebanon's top diplomat in Pakistan on Thursday appealed for more support from
Muslim nations to call for a ceasefire in his war-torn country.
Speaking at a press conference, Lebanese charge d'affaires in Pakistan,
Khalil Mohammed, said food, medicines, debris moving machines and financial
assistance are badly needed for the Lebanese people who are the victims of the
Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
"Israeli brutal aggression on the innocent Lebanese civilians and their homes
resulted in a large scale of destruction, human sufferings especially among the
women and children, as half million of the people rendered homeless and were
displaced from their homes and villages," Khalil Mohammed said.
He said the Higher Relief Commission of Lebanon has decided to appeal for the
financial assistance for those women and children, adding that the Israeli
bombing has isolated a large number of people in bomb hit areas of Lebanon from
rest of the country and aid cannot reach them.
"On the 30th day of the Israeli aggression, the humanitarian situation is
very difficult, as there are one million displaced people. More than 1,000
people in the south are living in total isolation from the rest of the homeland,
where they are suffering from lack of food, water, medicine and fuel," he said.
"Due to the blockage imposed by Israel, the relief goods are facing
difficulties in reaching Beirut," he said adding that the higher relief
commission has opened an account for donations.
The envoy welcomed the last week's call for ceasefire in Lebanon by the
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), saying the 57-member bloc of Muslim
nations should work with world powers to achieve peace in his country.
"We are asking for support, for more support and contacts with the
international major powers so that cease-fire would be achieved," he said.
He urged Islamic countries to work with major powers to accomplish a
ceasefire in the war-shattered Lebanon, saying the Lebanese prime minister has
chalked out a plan which calls for immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of the
Israeli military.
The envoy called for return of all the displaced people to their towns and
villages, adding Israel must return the Lebanese prisoners from its prison and
submit the maps of the land mines in Lebanon to the United Nations.
