Russia denied yesterday claims that Hezbollah militants are using
Russian-made weapons in the monthlong conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in
southern Lebanon.
"Russia strictly complies with its international commitments in pursuing its
military technological cooperation, including with countries in the Middle
East," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said in reply to a media
question. The transcript of his answer was posted on the ministry's web site.
"Our system of arms export control is one of the most reliable and rules out
the possibility of weapons falling into the wrong hands. We also take full
account of the volatile nature of the military and political situation in the
Middle East," Kamynin said.
"If there are any questions, there are normal diplomatic channels to clarify
them. So far, we have not received such inquiries, nor has any evidence been
offered," he said.
Kamynin's remarks came in response to reports citing high-ranking Israeli
officials that Hezbollah is using Russian-made anti-tank weapons in the
conflict.
