Iran on Sunday voiced satisfaction with a newly-adopted UN Security
Council resolution that calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese
Hezbollah.
"We are pleased to see the resolution that calls for the establishment of a truce," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid RezaAsefi told
reporters.
However, "we believe that the mass killing of the Lebanese should have been
prevented much earlier," he said, adding that a delay in the adoption of the
resolution by one month has impaired the credit of the UN Security Council.
"But since the Lebanese government and (Hezbollah chief) Mr. (Hassan)
Nasrallah have accepted the ceasefire proposal, we are also satisfied," Asefi
said.
The UN Security Council on Friday unanimously adopted the resolution that
calls for Israeli withdrawal and authorizes an increase of the existing UN force
in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese troops take control of south
Lebanon as Israel withdraws.
The resolution calls for a "full cessation of hostilities based upon, in
particular, the immediate cessation by Hezbollah of all attacks and the
immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations."
