Anti-war march in LA protests against Israeli military operation in Lebanon
13/8/2006 10:32

About 200 people marched through downtown Los Angeles Saturday to protest the Israeli military campaign in Lebanon and demand the United States stop supplying arms to Jerusalem.

The march, one of several demonstrations being held around the country including those in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, came one day after the UN Security Council's unanimous vote for a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.

Organizers had expected thousands of people, but only about 200 showed up, according to Los Angeles Police.

The anti-war A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition sponsored the event "to protest the current ongoing Israeli war against the people of Lebanon being funded by the U.S. government at the expense of U.S. taxpayers," according to Preston Wood, local coordinator of the coalition.

The group was joined by people from several local Islamic organizations, including the National Council of Arab Americans, Free Palestine Alliance, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California.

"People are deeply concerned about the terrible loss of life and the people being bombed and killed in their own country by Israeli troops," said Wood.

He said marchers were standing in solidarity with the people of Lebanon and Palestine, whom he described as victims of occupation by Israel, "a colonial outpost that protects the interests of the corporate elite in Washington."

The marchers' aim was also to stop U.S. financial support of Israel.

"The U.S. needs to stop spending billions of dollars arming Israel and start spending it at home," Wood said, noting schools and other local programs could use the financial assistance.

No incidents related to the rally were reported, said Los Angeles Police Officer Martha Garcia.
