Part of Israeli troops began to evacuate from south Lebanon this
morning shortly after a UNSC resolution calling for ending Israel-Lebanon
conflict took effect, the army said.
Only a limited number of troops began to withdraw from Lebanon on Monday,
media quoted army sources as saying, without disclosing further details.
Israel has poured tens of thousands of troops into Lebanon since the Jewish
state launched a massive assault against Lebanese Hezbollah on July 12 in
retaliation for the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by the Shiite group during
a cross-border attack.
The UN Security Council Resolution 1701, calling for Israel's withdrawal and
authorizing an increase of the existing UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to
help Lebanese government troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel
withdraws, went into effect at 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT).
The Israeli cabinet approved the resolution on Sunday but underlined that the
Jewish state reserve the right to self-defense.
