16/8/2006 17:17

Mexico called on Israel and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah to implement the UN Security Council resolution 1701, presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar told a press conference on Tuesday.

Mexican President Vicente Fox, "calls on all the actors (in the conflict) to comply with all international obligations in good faith and to adopt measures needed to achieve the goals set out inthe resolution," said the spokesman.

Mexico welcomed the resolution and favors peaceful means such as dialogue and negotiations to solve the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

He also voiced Mexico's support for the international efforts to seek a long-term and balanced solution to the conflict in the Middle East.

Last Friday the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 which calls for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon and authorizes an increase in the existing UN forces in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws. Both Israel and Lebanon accepted the resolution.

The ceasefire under the UN resolution went into effect at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Monday.
