Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Wednesday that Canada will
spend an additional 25 million Canadian dollars (about 23 million U.S. dollars)
in aid for Lebanon.
The money, part of a new Lebanon Relief Fund, will be added to another 5.5
million Canadian dollars (about 5 million U.S. dollars) that Canada has already
contributed to the country, Harper told reporters in Whitehorse, capital of
Yukon territory, on a northern tour.
"This money will help to provide much-needed humanitarian supplies such as
food, water and medicine to those who need help most," he said.
Harper also repeated his stance that Canada will not join a UN peacekeeping
force in Lebanon.
"The government has, at the current time, no plans to be involved in any
military deployments," he said.
