Kuwait on Sunday urged Arab countries to contribute to the reconstruction of
Lebanon, which has been battered in the 34-day-long conflict with Israel.
"Lebanon is in bad need for Arab solidarity and aid for reconstruction,"
Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah
al-Salem al-Sabah told reporters before leaving for Cairo for a meeting of Arab
foreign ministers on Lebanon.
Underscoring urgency for serious work of Arab countries, Sheikh Mohammad also
called for swift actions to boost stability and security in Lebanon.
In addition, the top Kuwaiti diplomat said that Arab foreign ministers would
discuss the situation in Lebanon and Arab efforts to help the country
politically and financially following the violence between Israel and Lebanon's
Hezbollah.
Sheikh Mohammad indicated that Kuwait would offer 800 million U.S. dollars of
aid to shore up the Lebanese economy and help rebuild Lebanon.
Saudi Arabia's call for an urgent Arab summit will be also discussed in the
Cairo meeting, he added.
A ceasefire went into effect on Aug. 14 in line with a UN Security Council
resolution, ending the Israel-Hezbollah conflict which erupted following the
capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah on July 12.
