One Israeli soldier was killed and three others were injured today when a
landmine exploded under their tank in south Lebanon, the Doha-based al-Jazeera
TV channel reported.
The pan-Arab television stations did not specify when and where the mine
blast occurred or name the source of their information. So far there was no
confirmation from the Israeli army either.
Israel has poured tens of thousands of troops into Lebanon since the Jewish
state launched a massive assault against Lebanese Hezbollah on July 12 in
retaliation for the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by the Shiite group during
a cross-border attack.
The incident was the first Israeli casualty since a U.N.-imposed cease-fire
agreement took effect on Aug. 14, ending 34 days of ferocious fighting.
Hundreds of Israeli troops have remained in southern Lebanon, waiting for a
U.N. peacekeeping force to take their places and guarantee a buffer zone between
Israel and the Hezbollah fighters.
