Israeli army storms Nablus, killing Palestinian gunman
17/12/2006 11:49

An Israeli army force stormed the northern West Bank city of Nablus yesterday morning and killed a Palestinian militant, Palestinian medics and eyewitnesses said.
The witnesses said that the force, backed by several jeeps and a bulldozer, stormed the center of the city, where Palestinian militants and Israeli soldiers exchanged fire.
Palestinian medics said that Joma'a Makhloof, 20, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers' gunfire, and witnesses said he was killed as he was on the roof of his house.
Meanwhile, Abu Jihad, spokesman of the Popular Army, a Palestinian militant group active in the city of Nablus, confirmed the death and condemned the Israeli action, calling it a violation of a ceasefire came into effect in late November.
"Yesterday they (Israeli soldiers) killed a Palestinian and today they killed another one. They violate the cease-fire agreement in the West Bank round the clock," said Abu Jihad.
However, he said that there was possibility to continue the cease-fire agreement with Israel despite such Israeli violations.
Israel and the Palestinians agreed on Nov. 26 a ceasefire, under which Israel withdraws forces from Gaza and the Palestinians stop firing rockets.
However, Israel refuses to extend the calm to the West Bank, despite the demands of the Palestinians.
