Germany condemned the nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of
Korea (DPRK) on Monday and called on the United Nations to take action.
"The German government strongly condemns today's nuclear test, "Foreign
Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement.
DPRK's official Korean Central News Agency said Monday morning that the
country had successfully conducted its first-ever underground nuclear test.
"Today's nuclear test is a threat to the region and beyond," Steinmeier said,
adding that Pyongyang was "following the wrong path into self-isolation."
He called on DPRK not to carry out any further tests of nuclear weapons and
also halt its missile program.
Also on Monday, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki told
reporters after meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer that the
two sides had decided to work together to take the issue to the UN Security
Council.
