The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) today proposed holding
military talks with the United States.
DPRK's Korean People's Army (KPA) "proposes having talks between the DPRK and
US militaries to be attended by a UN representative, too, in any place and at
any time to be agreed upon between both sides for the purpose of discussing the
issues related to ensuring the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula," said
a statement issued by the chief of the Panmunjom Mission of the KPA, DPRK's
official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
The DPRK urged the United States and the United Nations "to remain true to
their commitments under the AA (Armistice Agreement) till a new peace-keeping
mechanism is built on the Korean Peninsula."
The UN Security Council "is obliged to observe the principle and strictly
disallow the double standards in discharging its commitment to ensure global
peace and security."
DPRK's proposal came just two days after US Ambassador to South Korea
Alexander Vershbow said the United States is ready to begin negotiating a peace
treaty with the DPRK within this year if Pyongyang makes a strategic decision to
completely give up its nuclear ambition.
