Singapore is confident of outdoing their medal tally of the Busan Asiad,
setting a target of top-10 medal tally ranking in Doha.
Annabel Pennefather, chef de mission of Singapore contingent, told Xinhua
that a top-10 finish is their expectation of the 15th Asiad, especially after
they sent their largest-ever 215-strong contingent to Doha.
"We are optimistic that the Doha Asian Games will be a defining year for
Singapore sports and we are confident that we can outdo our medal tally at the
2002 Asian Games," Pennefather said at Monday's team welcome ceremonies at the
Flag Plaza of the athletes' village.
"That we are sending our largest contingent ever to Doha is testament to the
quality of our athletes. Every Team Singapore athlete will be striving for
excellence and competing to win, " said Pennefather, who was also the first
woman chef de mission to the 2004 Athens Olympic.
The Singapore contingent to Doha comprises 134 athletes and 81 officials.
Last time, there were 92 athletes and 50 officials to the 2002 Busan Asian
Games. Singapore athletes will be competing in 16 sports in Doha, three more
than those in the Busan Games.
Singapore sailor Roy Tay took the honor of carrying the Singapore flag at
this year's opening and closing ceremonies in Doha.
"It is a great honor and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to bear
the Nation's flag and lead the contingent at the Opening Ceremony for the 15th
Asian Games in Doha," said Roy Tay, who had participated previously in the 1998
Bangkok Games and2002 Busan Games.
Pennefather mentioned that their medal hope come from sports like sailing,
table-tennis, bodybuilding, billiards and bowling.
Singapore finished 13th with 5 golds, 2 silvers and 10 bronzes in the Busan
Asiad four years ago.
