A flag-raising ceremony for the delegation of the Republic of Yemen was held
Monday at the athletes' village of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, capital of
Qatar, marking the official admission of the team into the village.
Mayor of the athletes' village Ahmed A. al-Khulaifi gave a welcome speech at
the ceremony, saying that Doha promised to provide to the visitors full comfort
and convenience during the Games, which is scheduled for Dec. 1 to 15.
Yemen delegation comprises 44 members including 24 athletes. They will
compete in six sport events, namely track and field, Judo, Karate, taekwondo,
table tennis and Wushu, in the upcoming Games.
"I expect we will have good performance in Judo and Wushu," Abdullah
al-Kebsi, chef de mission of Yemen told Xinhua.
Yemen, which has a population of some 22 million with an area of 527,970
square km in the southern part of the Arabic Peninsula, ranked 36th at the 2002
Busan Asian Games with one bronze medal.
Yemen took part in the 2004 Athens Olympics, but achieved no medals.
