Eight men's volleyball teams, including Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Macao,
entered preliminary round 2 while Mongolians and Maldivians had to end their
Asiad journey.
The eight winners will compete for another two seats of quarterfinals against
India and Thailand while host Qatar has directly entered the last eight with
five world championship participants, namely China, Japan, South Korea, Iran and
Kazakhstan.
Two of the three matches scheduled on Tuesday were canceled as Maldives and
Palestine quit from the matches for illness and traveling difficulties
respectively.
The withdrawal of the two teams awarded a default win to Chinese Taipei and
United Arab Emirates, which entered the preliminary round 2 as the top finishers
of Pool C and Pool D respectively.
Bahrain stunned Mongolia in straight sets 25-16, 25-15,25-16 and entered the
next preliminary round along with Lebanon from Pool A.
In Pool B, Saudi Arabia and Macao of China had been guaranteed to reach round
2 as Indonesia quit before the event opened on Sunday.
According to the schedule, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Macao were drawn in
one group with Thailand and Bahrain while India, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait
and the United Arab Emirates are in the other. Only the top finishers of two
groups qualified for the quarterfinals.
"We have a chance to win our first match in round 2 against Macao as Saudi
Arabia had defeated Macao in round 1 and our quality is almost the same with
that of Saudi Arabia," said Sanicic Aleksandar, Bahrain's head coach, who led
his team to finish fourth at the just-ended Arabian Championship.
"But we will make full preparations for the match. We have recorded Macao's
last match and we will study it carefully," said Aleksandar.
