Chinese Taipei is hoping for medal haul in men's events and vigilant on
evergreen South Korea and Japan at the Doha Asiad soft tennis tournament, said
their coach on Monday.
"I think for the men's events, our Wang Chun Yen stands a good chance as he
won three gold medals at the East Asian Games in 2005." said Chinese Taipei
coach Hsu Tung Kuo on Monday after the team trained at the Khalifa International
Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.
"As for the women, Chou Chiu Ping is very strong as she got silver at the
East Asian Games.
Yet Wang Chun Yen, who chalked up three golds impressively at last year's
East Asian Games in men's team, singles and doubles, needs to dig deep at the
Asiad in Doha as his ex-partner Fang Tung-Hsien has announced retirement ahead
of the Asian Games.
"Fang retired this year. I hope Wang does a good job without him. I still
have not chosen who will pair Wang yet, that depends on the player's condition.
In the last Asiad edition in Busan, South Korea four years ago, the South
Koreans had a clean sweep of all the seven golds and three silvers as well. The
Japanese shared three silver medals, leaving Chinese Taipei a consolatory silver
in mixed doubles.
"South Korea and Japan are our biggest rivals yet again."
The Asian Games soft tennis tourney is slated for December 2-8 with the team
events to be held initially.
