Sri Lanka gold hope shadowed by Jayasinghe's illness
29/11/2006 10:32

Sri Lanka's gold hope was shadowed as Olympic medallist Susanthika Jayasing was suffering from viral flu.

Maxwell De Silva, the deputy chef de mission of Sri Lanka, told Xinhua that the 31-year-old Sri Lankan sprint queen failed to come with them to Doha due to a health problem but she made a speedy recovery and will be fit for the Doha Asian Games next month.

Jayasinghe was suffering from viral flu Chikungunya and will be out for at least a week, according to a Sri Lankan official.

Even if Jayasinghe recovered within a week, she may not have adequate time to train and catch her lost workouts to be physically fit for the women's 100m and 200m races, which may be her last chance to prove herself in the Asiad.

Despite winning medals at the Olympic and world championship level, Jayasinghe is yet to win an Asian Games gold medal in her pet event of women's 200m.

Besides Jayasinghe, three Sri Lanka sprinters - Damayanthi Darsha, Sugath Tillakaratne and J.M.S. Weerasuriya, have already been ruled out of the upcoming Games due to injuries.
