Women's world number two Guo Yan of China has missed the world champions'
opening matches against Kuwait due to an eye ailment in the table tennis' team
event at the Doha Asian Games here on Wednesday.
Huang Biao, manager to China's table tennis team, declined to give any
details.
"Guo Yan felt uncomfortable with her left eye this morning and has to rest
during the team's day one competitions here," said Huang.
No comments from the team define whether or not the 23-year-oldgirl, the
women's singles runner-up at last year's world championships in Shanghai, could
be available for China's Group B matches against Hong Kong, China, the last and
toughest opponents for the six-time Asiad team winners in the first round.
According to a source close to the Chinese team's medical staff, Guo Yan had
been sent to the hospital inside the Athletes' Village and did some transfusions
to cure her left eye.
"It should be some inflammation," the source told Xinhua.
Guo Yan's absence had little influence on the Chinese team's first day
competitions, however, as head coach Shi Zhihao sent Asiad debutants Chen Qing
and Li Xiaoxia onto the court and came up with a 3-0 team event victory over
Kuwait.
