Chinese women's judo team coach Wu Weifeng said on Wednesday that her players
were fully prepared to meet their Japanese rivals in the Doha Asian Games.
Wu said she read the reports about the withdrawal of Japanese Olympic gold
medallist Maki Tsukada from the Asian Games and her successor was Mai Tateyama.
Tsukada, winner of the over 78-kilogram title in the 2004 Athens Olympic
Games, withdrew from the Doha Asian Games over a calf injury during a training
session in Japan.
"Tsukada's withdrawal is unexpected for us, but we are prepared for such
things," Wu said after a training session in Qatar Sports Club, adding that she
knew something about 20-year-old Tateyama.
China's judo star Tong Wen, who is expected to meet Tateyama, is in "good
shape", Wu said.
Japanese team officials clamored that Japan would sweep all women's judo gold
medals in the upcoming Asian Games.
"The Japanese women's judo team boosts several very good players, and
Japanese officials used to make such comments (of sweeping all gold medals)," Wu
said.
"Gold medals belong to winners in the matches, and the results are not
decided by them," Wu said.
