Vietnam hopes to take home at least one more gold medal than the four it won
in Busan, the top official of the Vietnamese delegation said in the Doha
Athletes' Village on Wednesday.
"We took four gold medals in the Busan Asiad four years ago, and improving on
past performance is our goal in the Asian Games,"Nguyen Van Quan, the deputy
chef de mission said.
Vietnam took four gold medals, seven silvers and seven bronzes in Busan in
2002, placed 15th in the medal tally.
According to Nguyen, soccer and volleyball may be the most popular sports in
Vietnam but its gold medal hopes lie with the cue sports squad, one that
delivered in Busan along with the Karate team.
The addition of more martial arts disciplines such as Wushu hasonly raised
its hopes of a better showing. Medals are also expected from taekwondo,
bodybuilding and weightlifting.
Nguyen was also impressed with the facilities at the Athletes' Village.
"Everything is well planned here and should they be able to cater to the varied
dietary requirements of my athletes, we will be very happy," he said.
