Chinese women's tennis players warned of complacence
1/12/2006 10:05

Chinese women's tennis team coach Jiang Hongwei said yesterday that his players need to watch out their steps despite their high ranking positions at the 15th Asian Games tennis tournament.

"We have a chance, but we must do our best and take it match after match," said Jiang at the Khalifa Tennis Courts. "We have Asia's No. 1 in women's singles and doubles, but it is hard to sayin the court."

The Chinese female players came to Doha as the hottest favorites as the dream squad for the Asiad tennis tournament feature world number 21 and Asian number one Li Na, Asian number three Zheng Jie, number four Peng Shuai and doubles ace Yan Zi, who partnered Zheng to win the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year and 2004 Olympic champions Li Ting/Sun Tiantian.

The sole threat in women's field will be the Japanese, but they all had a hard time this season except 26th-ranked Ai Sugiyama, who skipped the games for personal reasons.

"Thailand, Chinese Taipei, India and Japan all have good teams now.

"But We made one-month preparations for the Asian Games, now we are ready to go and up for the challenge.

"We have been here three times before, so we are used to the conditions in Doha. Right now the circumstances are good."
