A table tennis player from Macao has been banned from Asian Games
competitions after being tested twice to have used illegal glue during the
ongoing men's team event, released a team member in Doha on Thursday.
Leong Kin Wa, who had been registered to play all men's
events, the men's team, singles, doubles, as well as the mixed doubles, was
found using a racket felted with some unauthorized glue after Macao's first
round team defeat to Group C rivals Vietnam and HongKong, China, on Wednesday.
According to the related regulations by the world table tennis governing body
ITTF (the International Table Tennis Federations), Leong was stripped of his
results in former matches and handed the suspension.
"I don't think the player was intentional to do so," said Macao's coach Wong
Chong Fan.
"We are all amateurs, and know little about the regulations. We brought some
glue here to the Asiad, but it ran far from enough. So we had to buy the local
products, which were not authorized.
"I felt so sorry to my players since I should have known about that," he
added.
The Macao team has accepted the sanction, but appealed to the discipline
committee for the Asiad table tennis competitions to win a permit of substitute
Leung from Macao's list of coming events.
"It's a rare chance for us to take part in the Asian Games, and we don't want
to waste it," said Wong.
The Chinese table tennis team has reached a hand to the Macao team, helping
them to write appeals in English.
Macao has been ousted from the men's team events after losing two of their
three group matches to miss the quarterfinals. The team, however, has saved
their pride by winning one match here, beating Bahrain 3-2 on Thursday in their
final clash of the first round.
In the Bremen world championships last May, Macao played in division 4 and
finished 82nd.
