The DAGOC (Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee) bills "the games of life"
to the forthcoming 15th Asiad. The "green element" in Doha now is poised to add
weight to their motto for the Games.
You can not imagine Doha is a city on desert when you are on a shuttle bus to
the athletes village, sport city, venues of various events. The roads and
streets are well decorated among seas of lawns, trees and clusters of flowers.
Qatar is a country of extreme drought with an annual rainfall of no more than
70 milimeters, which is far from enough to support the water demand of plants.
All the trees, grasses and flowers in Doha need regular irrigation to sustain
their growth.
In the oil-rich gulf country, water is more valued than oil and the
irrigation program is very costly. But Qatar has just overcome their natural
defects to present an outstanding scenerio to the Asian pageant and even the
world.
There have already been complete and consummate green belts in old city area,
and in the new city area and newly-built venues, large scale of lawn-paving and
trees planting is going on. Piles of lawn are transported to Doha everyday and
thousands of workers take shifts in laying and irrigation fixing.
Except the natural lawn, the artificial lawn is used in some special places
like the construction sites and bustling streets. The green canvas is also a
complementary tool applied by Doha in building up a world of green and the games
of green.
Qatari sports officials have already spoken out of their intention of bidding
to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Whether Doha can win the bid or not, the "green
element" of Doha Asian Games will surely pull off credits from AOC (Asian
Olympic Council) and IOC (International Olympic Committee).
