Philippine bowlers hope to improve their performance in Doha Asian Games,
local media reported today.
The Filipinos are hopeful they can at least duplicate their finish in Busan,
said a report by The Manila Bulletin daily.
Four years ago in Busan, the Filipinos won one gold courtesy of Paeng
Nepomuceno and RJ Bautista who topped the doubles event.
"It's hard to predict the outcome because a lot of factors haveto be taken
into consideration," said Nepomuceno, the four-time World Cup champion.
Apart from Nepomuceno, the men's team is filled with superstars, namely:
reigning world champion Biboy Rivera, 2003 World Cup champion Christian Jan
Suarez, Southeast Asian Games titlist Markwin Tee and Tyrone Ongpauco.
Hopes are also high in the women's event, said the report.
Save for rookie Maryann Posadas, the women's team is practically composed of
Ma. Liza del Rosario, Cecilia Yap, Irene Garcia-Benitez, Josephine Canare and
Liza Clutario who garnered the silver medal in the team event in Busan.
Clutario also won the bronze in singles in Busan.
Canare is the hottest Filipina bowler, having won Hong Kong leg of the ABF
Tour last September.
Philippine bowlers have had modest success since the sport made its debut in
the Asian Games in 1978.
The Filipinos have so far won six golds, eight silvers and seven bronzes,
fourth best in the region.
Japan tops the scale with 13-13-6 medal tally followed by South Korea
12-10-10 and Chinese Taipei 8-4-7.
