Chinese teenager Wu Peng made a successful defence of the men's 200m
butterfly in the most anticipated swimming competition of the night in Doha
yesterday at the Asian Games. Wu, who beat 2004 Olympic Games silver medalist
Takashi Yamamoto to win four years ago in Busan, South Korea, once again
overcame his Japanese rival to triumph in one minute 54.91. Wu improved his
personal best with 0.8 seconds and would have won the world championships gold
medal if he had swam this fast last year in Montreal, Canada where Wu took home
a bronze in 1:56. 50 while Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland was crowned in
1:55.02. "I had known that the two Japanese swimmers could be very fast in
the first 150 meters, so I did not worry when they led then," said the
19-year-old. "I did what I had planned because I knew it would be like this,
" he added. East Asian Games winner Takeshi Matsuda took the silver in 1:55.
49 while his teammate Ryuichi Shibata, silver medalist at this year's Pan
Pacific championships, settled for the third in 1:56.44.
