South Korea booked a berth of the last four in the badminton women's team
event at the Doha Asiad after beating Indonesia and Hong Kong of China here on
Sunday.
As a powerhouse, South Korea unexpectedly suffer a 3-2 loss in a fierce
battle against Japan on Wednesday and had to fight for the
last semifinal berth with Indonesia and Hong Kong of China, the runners-up in
the other two groups.
In the morning, South Korea blew down Indonesia with victories of Hwang Hye
Yeon, Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung, and Hwang Yu Mi/Ha Jung Eun.
Despite losing their first game against Hong Kong of China in the afternoon,
South Korea grasped their last ray of hope with efforts of Hwang Yu Mi/Lee Hyo
Dung, Lee Yun Hwa and Lee Kyung Won/Ha Jung Eun.
Having beaten Hwang Hye Yeon 21-19, 12-21 and 21-12 in the first game, Yip
Pui Yin didn't believe that the Hong Kong of China could finish off South Korea.
"I don't think we will make it to the semifinals. South Korea is a strong team
and we are weaker. Maybe in the singles event, one or two of us could win."
A tired Yip then combined with Chau Hoi Wah in the fourth match, but lost to
Lee Kyung Won/Ha Jung Eun 21-7, 21-11.
In Monday's semifinals, South Korea will meet the unbeatable Chinese line-up
and Singapore is going to fight against Japan.
