Two Chinese women beach volleyball duos, Tian Jia and Wang Jie, and Zhang Xi
and Xue Chen, opened their campaign for the gold medal with easy victories at
the Doha Asiad on Sunday.
Tian Jia and Wang Jie dominated the match against surprise first round winner
Luk Teck Eng and Beh Shun Thing of Malaysia and stormed to a 21-13, 21-10
victory over the latter in less than 40 minutes.
Another Chinese pair Zhang Xi and Xue Chen, ranked world's No. 3, is also on
fire as they beat their Filipino competitors Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua
21-15, 21-18.
"This is my first match in the game, so I'm a little bit nervous because I'm
eager to win," said Tian Jia. "My partner and I won the champions at Busan Asiad
and I believe we can do it again."
Another two women's matches of the day were between Japan and Thailand.
Kamoltip Kulna and Jarunee Sannok of Thailand gained a hard 2-1 win over fourth
seed Chiaki Kusuhara and Satoko Urata of Japan, while another Japanese team
Shinako Tanaka and Eiko Koizumi,the third seeds of the event, beat Yupa
Phokongploy and Usa Tenpaksee 2-0.
For the men's competition on Sunday, the highest-seeded team, Salim Agus and
Supriadi Supriadi of Indonesia survived after a hard 2-1 victory over their
less-experienced Cambodian peers Som Chamnap and Koung Sopheap.
Malaysian pair Khoo Chong Long and Abdul Latif Muhd Rafiq Arumi,upset Odeh
Ayman and Asfour Rafi of Palestine 2-1 at the opening match of the day.
Two Indian pairs, Poothathan Mohan and Pradeep John, and Mohammed Jameeluddin
and Tilkam Shashidhar, both suffered bitter losses to their opponents from
Bahrain and Sri Lanka respectively.
Twenty-three teams are take parting in the men's tournament, while 14 women
teams are competing in the women's.
