Japanese men and South Korean women were crowned in the soft tennis team
events at the 15th Asian Games on Sunday.
Japan ruled out a strong comeback from Chinese Taipei to win the men's final
2-1 while South Korea edged out Japan 2-1 to defend their title in the women's final at the Khalifa Soft Tennis Courts.
The Japanese men revenged their loss to Chinese Taipei in the 2005 East Asian
Games final by beating the opponents in one hour and 35 minutes.
"After taking the first doubles, the players felt pressure. They did not
perform as we expected in the singles and second doubles," said Chinese Taipei
coach Kuo Hsu Tung.
Chinese Taipei made a good start as their Li Chia Hung/Yang Sheng Fa claimed
the first doubles following a breezing 5-1 win over Japanese pair Naoya
Hanada/Tatsuro Kawamura.
The second rubber was also lopsided but it was Japan's turn to draw the blood
when Hidenori Shinohara beat Wang Chun Yen 4-1 without a hitch.
In the deciding second doubles, Chinese Taipei's Lin Shun Wu and Yeh Chia Lin
rallied from three games down to make it 3-all but the staid Shigeo Nakahori and
Tsuneo Takagawa took the following two games in a row to claim the 5-3 victory
for Japan.
In women's part, defending champions South Korea needed two hours and 25
minutes to outlast the Japanese, revenging the their final loss to the same
opponents at the 2005 East Asian Games in Macao, China.
"We have to make a restart. Now I feel really disappointed. We are a good
team, but we couldn't make it," said Japanese coach Masaharu Watanabe.
"We felt the heat for being the gold favorites. I had expected that my team
would do better in the doubles and singles events," he added.
The men's bronze went to South Korea, who beat Mongolia 2-0 in a one-sided
match. The women's third place went to Chinese Taipei who beat China 2-0.
