Chinese continued their dominance on gymnastics by collecting both men's and
women's all-around titles at Doha Asian Games yesterday.
Chinese world champion Yang Wei beat Japanese duo Hisashi Mizutori and
Hiroyuki Tomita to lift men's all-around title by scoring 95.500 points against
93.400 points by Hisashi Mizutori and Yang's arch rival Hiroyuki Tomita in third
on 93.250.
Chinese teenager He Ning won the women's all-around gold on 59.450 points,
0.400 points ahead of her teammate Zhou Zhuoru, while DPR Korean Hong Su Jong
was third on 57.800.
Yang Wei came forward over Tomita after the third rotation of rings by
grabbing 16.550 points in the apparatus and never surrendered his lead from then
on.
Yang outperformed his teammate Chen Yibing, the rings world champion at
Aarhus, on Chen's specialty, who recorded a mark of 16.500.
Yang just consolidated his margin by vaulting 16.600 points in the fourth
rotation. Tomita's costly vault error for landing on his rear forfeited his
chance of pressing hard on Yang, taking in just 15.450 points.
Yang geared up to further extend his lead by scoring 16.300 points, highest
on parallel bars, while error-prone Tomita staggered on landing and had to
settle with a tied third place with his teammate Hisashi Mizutori before the
high bar competition.
Yang went into the high bar with a edge of 2.450 points over Tomita and
Mizutori and a low difficulty routine is enough to ensure the Yang the gold.
Mizutori collected 15.750 points in high bar and finished second in total, while
Yang showcased a fluent move and earned 15.400 points to defend his all-around
title at Asiad.
"I realized the gold came to me when I landed on the cushion from the high
bar. I am relaxed mentally, but I can feel the fatigue physically after the
event," said Yang Wei.
"I think Tomita is my arch rival until I retire after 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The victory gives me a lot of confidence."
"I respect Tomita a lot and I think he is a very persistent gymnast," added
Yang.
"I will try to become the most prolific athlete at Doha Asian Games and try
to win two more gold medals."
Tomita spilt positive appraisal for Yang. "He is a very powerful competitor
for me. He can perform his skill out with high stability," Tomita commented on
Yang.
Chinese gymnasts finished one-two on women's all-around and extended China's
sweep on gymnastics by taking the fourth gold.
Hong's fall from beam cost her hard-earned chance to bid for DPR Korea's
first ever all-around title after leading the ranking over the first two
apparatus.
Hong scored a total of 29.850 points after two rotations, establishing a edge
of 1.100 points over second-ranked Zhou Zhuoru.
Hong's shock frustration came in the third rotation of beam, which she also
dropped from on the qualification round. She failed to sustain her balance and
fell down to drain her score by a large margin.
He Ning grabbed the best mark of the night on beam with 15.600 and Zhou
Zhuoru aslo escalated her ranking with 15.450 to erase their gap with Hong. Both
of them surpassed Hong Su Jong and seized the top two positions before the last
apparatus of floor exercise.
He Ning took further stride on floor to wrap up her title at Asiad with a
score of 15.200, and Zhou followed up with 14.850 against Hong's 14.450.
"It's a perfect experience for me. I think I was in better form today than
that when I was at Aarhus gymnastic worlds," said He Ning.
"I think my grandpa is watching the match and he must be very happy at the
moment," added He.
Zhou Zhuoru seemed less satisfied with the silver medal and was a little
disappointed after the victory ceremony.
"I think He performed better than me today, so she deserves the gold medal. I
have to wait for the next time to win," told Zhou.
Lu Shanzhen, head coach of women's team, gave more credit to He's spirit and
mentality than her skills.
"I think He Ning has the best mentality in match though she is not the best
on skills," Lu said after the match.
